Retail Chaplaincy

Chaplaincy in the retail sector has flourished in Scotland over the last few years. Up and down the country chaplains can be found in shopping malls both large and small, city centre shopping areas, local high streets and large supermarkets. It is estimated that the 15 people who work as Retail Chaplains reach 15000 staff members.

There are a variety of people who undertake this work. Full and part time, paid and voluntary, ordained and lay, men and women from a wide variety of church traditions. Each chaplain brings his or her own unique way of hearing an individual’s story, offering pastoral support and communicating the gospel in the ever- changing environment of retail.

As Scottish retail chaplains we meet twice a year (usually in Edinburgh) to share our experiences and provide support for each other. In terms of practical assistance this can be as simple as answering questions like, How do I advertise my presence? How do I maintain my enthusiasm? We can also offer prayer support for individual circumstances. We also have the opportunity to meet with the UK retail network, which meets twice a year in England. This meeting also offers the opportunity for training or discussion around topics concerning retail as well as time for support and sharing.
