Welcome to WORK PLACE CHAPLAINCY SCOTLAND

In 2008 the Scottish Churches Industrial Mission  Council took the decision to restructure into Work Place Chaplaincy Scotland, (WPCS), a body which, it hoped, would be more able to address and manage the challenges of providing pastoral and spiritual support to those in the varied workplaces of contemporary Scotland. Such a body would require to have a robust and professional management structure which would allow chaplaincy to be offered to all regardless of their religious affiliation or lack of it, by chaplains of any Christian denomination.

The vision to provide high quality trained chaplains of any denomination, providing long term consistent and sustainable chaplaincy presents considerable challenges not least in terms of line management and supervision, training, local church and inter-church relations and funding.
Work place chaplaincy is quite simply about Christian service. It is the practical working out, by the churches in Scotland, of Christ’s command to “love your neighbour as yourself”

Work Place Chaplaincy Scotland provides, trains and supports chaplains of all denominations to serve in the work places of Scotland. While those who are involved in chaplaincy do so as an act of Christian service, the care and suppoort which they provide is offered to everyone of any faith or none. While not a multifaith agency, WPCS will also respect non-Christian faith groups and provide contact details as appropriate to those who require them.

Chaplaincy can be provided in many different setting  from large factories to small retail outlets, city centres to local government offices . Wherever chaplains serve they seek to help and support individuals and organisations face the challenges of daily life. This may take the form of confidential chats or a listening ear, oiling the cogs of industrial relations oroffering comnfort intimes of crisis. Whatever form it takes chaplaincy is to the benefit of employees and employers alike. Studies have consistently shown that where good quality, consistent chaplaincy is provided, personel feel better supported, absentee rates fall and industrial relations improve.

For chaplains, wherever they are and whatever they are involved in the motto of Work Place Chaplaincy Scotland remains the same:“ We’re there and we care”

There are Area Organisers in the North,Central, East and West regions of Scotland.

These Area Organisers seek to place chaplains in work places and encourage and develop relationships  between industry and commerce and the communities in which they work.  They also keep church communities aware that Work Place Chaplaincy is a demanding yet rewarding sphere of ministry, significantly contributing to working life and an important part of the churches' mission to the world.
